There are many important reasons to use ARP main stud kits, including the elimination of main cap walk and fretting, as well as protecting the threads in your engine block. All kits come complete with hardened parallel-ground washers and high quality nuts. Some applications have provisions for mounting windage trays and have specially designed standoff studs with serrated lock nuts to position the windage tray and lock it securely in place. The studs are manufactured from 8740 chrome moly steel, heat-treated in-house to 200,000 psi tensile strength, and precision J-form threads rolled after heat-treat to create a fastener that has threads 1000% stronger than others.
ARP Torque Specs
- Final torque: 60 ft-lbs
- Lubricant: ARP Ultra-Torque on the threads and under the nuts/washers
- Sequence: tighten in 3 equal steps following the factory Mazda torque sequence
All torque values assume ARP Ultra-Torque fastener assembly lubricant (included in the kit). Do not substitute motor oil — ARP notes it produces higher friction and inconsistent clamp load.
FAQ
Do I have to use ARP Ultra-Torque?
Yes. Every torque value above was developed by ARP using ARP Ultra-Torque lubricant, which is included in the kit. Using motor oil or moly paste instead will change the friction and give you a different (and inconsistent) clamp load at the same torque reading.
Can ARP studs be reused?
Yes. ARP studs can be reused as long as the threads are undamaged and they were not over-torqued. Clean and inspect the threads, re-lubricate with fresh ARP Ultra-Torque, and torque to spec.
Why three torque steps?
ARP specifies tightening in three equal steps following the factory torque sequence. Stepping up gradually seats the fastener evenly and gives a far more consistent clamp load than going straight to full torque.
Do I need to align-hone with main studs?
ARP recommends align-honing the main bores when installing aftermarket main studs, since the stronger fasteners distort the main caps differently than the factory bolts.

the only product i recommend for every motor
these ARP main studs are an absolute must when it comes to building a motor at any power level. stock mains are not meant to be torqued multiple times, but these ones can be torqued as many times as you need. definitely a good starting point for any build.
